From a bike shop to the center of Air Force innovation

In 1903, the Wright Brothers turned a humble Dayton bike shop into the launchpad for one of history’s biggest leaps: powered flight. More than a century later, the Miami Valley is still a center of gravity for military aerospace research and acquisition. It’s also a community where WIN has deep roots, and it’s why we’re excited to bring the Summit Series to Dayton.

What’s at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base?

Wright-Patterson Air Force Base (Wright-Patt) is the largest single-site employer in Ohio, with more than 38,000 military, civilian, and contractor personnel. It’s also home to several of the organizations shaping national readiness:

  • Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL): The Department of the Air Force’s dedicated research lab, managing a multi-billion-dollar research and development (R&D) portfolio across air, space, and cyberspace.
  • Air Force Life Cycle Management Center (AFLCMC): Responsible for the life cycle management of all Air Force aircraft, engines, munitions, and electronic systems.
  • National Air and Space Intelligence Center (NASIC): The Department of War’s (DoW) primary source of intelligence on foreign air and space threats.
  • AFWERX: The Air Force’s innovation arm, powered by AFRL, bringing small businesses and startups into the defense ecosystem.

For innovators, that concentration matters. The people who set Air Force requirements, fund R&D, and buy technology are all in one region.

Built inside the Air Force innovation ecosystem

WIN works alongside AFWERX, AFRL, and DAFT3 to find promising technologies, prepare them, and get them into the hands of the warfighter. We know how these offices work and what they look for. Our job is to make sure you show up prepared and with the proper guidance to navigate the ecosystem.

Innovation can come from anywhere

WIN connects innovators in every state and region to the federal partners who need their technology. That includes regions that don’t have the infrastructure and connections of larger defense hubs. To date, WIN has helped its partners secure more than $350 million in transition awards.

The Summit Series brings innovators, researchers, and Air Force stakeholders into the same room with a simple goal: to close the gap between the people building technology and the people who need it, and to make the contracting process easier to understand along the way.
